SEO is the most important factor, especially when it comes to Blogging as well as your online presence. It’s a process of improving your website’s visibility in search engines. In short, you own that way, search engines shows your whole website. Adjusting your perfect SEO helps to rank your website higher in search results which leads to more traffic and more sales and more revenue.
In this post, I will take you through the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and the way, you can add it to your WordPress.
For this tutorial, I am using Yoast SEO (The #1 Plugin For Search Engine Optimization). I have been using it for months and I am quite happy with the results they are providing. The best part is that, this wonderful plugin is free to use and easy to setup.
STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR ADDING YOAST SEO TO WORDPRESS SITE:
Download and Install Yoast SEO Plugin and hit activate. Once it’s activated, you will be redirected to the Dashboard.
TITLES AND METAS
Click on Titles and Metas and then general tab. Now select your title separator as shown in the image below.
Then comes the next tab, click on Homepage and here you will need to give your website a title and a Meta description. You must be knowing that this is what search engines will display in their search results.
You can change or alter it anytime you wish to but changes in search engines will normally be reflected within 2-3 days.
After you have filled out the homepage section, come on Post Types. Select the format of your title template and configure the settings as per your choice or if you wish you can simply choose the settings which I have done for GraspMyGizmo.
Now, when you will scroll down, you’ll see Pages and Media sections. Here, I haven’t provided the image because you just need to copy the exact settings which you have done for the Post sections.
For Pages and Media sections:
Title Template : %%title%%
Meta Robots : Index | Date In Snippet Preview : Hide | Yoast SEO Meta Box : Show
That’s nice !
Now we need to jump over the Taxonomies tab and here are the settings which are configured for GraspMyGizmo. I don’t remember making changes to this tab because configuring the Taxonomies tab is not highly recommended.
Also, I guess these are the default settings of Yoast SEO.
You can opt for the same settings or you can alter or make changes according to your expertise level.
After you have successfully completed the Taxonomies tab, head over to the Archives tab and refer to the screenshot below.
If you see that settings are same as in the image, then prefer it not to change.
Head over to the Others tab and configure your settings.
After this step we have successfully completed the Titles and Metas section. Now, quickly head over to the next section Social.
Here is the place where you can link your social media accounts so that the search engines can happily display your each and every network in their search results.
Here is a screenshot of how it looks.
Next comes the XML Sitemap section. Sitemap contains all the links from your website at a single place which makes it much easier for bots and crawlers to crawl the pages in relatively less time.
You can check out GraspMyGizmo’s Sitemap here.
Here is the way you can configure the same. Make sure to enable the XML sitemap functionality and head over to the User sitemap tab.
Personally, I haven’t enabled Author sitemap. You can enable or disable as you wish. There’s no harm in it.
Progress to the next tab Post Types and here make sure to add posts and pages in sitemap. Adding Media is optional.
Next comes the Taxonomies tab.
Now we have completed the three sections and we are moving on to the next section Advanced. In this section, I haven’t tried or tested Breadcrumbs.
So, I have preferred to disable it. You can enable it as per your wish.
The next tab is Permalinks Tab and I have configured it as in the image below and it’s working quite great for me.
Move on to the Really Simple Syndication (RSS) tab.
By default, your RSS Feed settings would be somewhat different which would be a heck. So, make sure to make corrections as in the image I have provided.
We have completed the most important sections and and we are left with two more sections: Tools and Search Console. Both of them are easy to configure and you can do it on your own.
In Tools section in File editor, you can prefer to configure your site’s robots.txt which commands bots and crawlers what to crawl and what not to crawl on your webpage.
It is a standard used by websites to communicate with web crawlers.
You can check out GraspMyGizmo’ robots.txt here
One more thing, do not interact with .htaccess file in file editor section. It is recommended to configure, only when you have an area of expertise in that.
Moreover, the Yoast SEO plugin is also available under premium plans with some more added features. If you are just starting out, I would recommend the free plugin and later on, when you need more customization’s you can simply upgrade.
